DID YOU KNOW -- At over 2,100 annually, more boys participate in theatre than in any other VHSL academic activity, and theatre is the VHSL's second most popular activity overall (next to Scholastic Bowl) with 75% of schools taking part.

During the 1931-32 school year, Sussex-Stoney Creek, Highland Springs and George Washington-Danville took the titles in their respective divisions. These days, Madison County and Galax High Schools are the most likely contenders for Group A state titles, though J.J. Kelly took its first title in 2007-08. With the once-dominant Appomattox County out of the way, the field is now open for festival regulars, Pulaski County, Abingdon and Salem-Salem, though Harrisonburg came from nowhere to take the more recent title with its production of Working. 

In 2009-10, Albemarle High School of Charlottesville won its first Group AAA title with its production of The Zoo Story, while in Group AA, Jamestown High School of Williamsburg also won for the first time with its production of Tuna Fish Eulogy, A Ladder Play.  In Group A, Nelson County High School claimed its first title with its production of Degas C'est Moi.

In 2008-09, 3,322 girls and 2,146 boys at 235 member schools participated in theatre.
