Newspapers

DID YOU KNOW -- Publications (newspaper, newsmagazine, literary/art magazine and yearbook) are the only activities in which multiple schools in a Group may emerge as state champions, since publications are evaluated and ranked against a set of criteria, and not other publications.

Since 1995, the VHSL has also recognized schools that have received five Trophy Class rankings within a seven-year period by awarding them with the Charles E. Savedge Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholastic Journalism.

The VHSL has offered evaluation services for newspapers since 1923, when the only school to receive the Trophy Class was Newport News High School.
