Newsmagazines

DID YOU KNOW -- Publications (newsmagazine, literary/art magazine, yearbook and newspaper) are the only activities in which multiple schools in a Group may emerge as state champions, since publications are evaluated and ranked against a set of criteria, and not other publications.  During the 2008-09 school year, three high schools reached the pinnacle of success in newsmagazine publication and were awarded a Trophy Class ranking:  Bethel, Madison County and Oakton.

Since 1995, the VHSL has also recognized schools that have received five Trophy Class rankings within a seven-year period by awarding them with the Charles E. Savedge Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholastic Journalism.  Schools with Savedge Awards for newsmagazine publication are George Washington (2) and Gar-Field.

The VHSL has offered evaluation services for newsmagazines since 1975.  That year, three schools received Trophy Class rankings:  Martinsville, Woodbridge and James Monroe.
