Magazines

DID YOU KNOW -- Publications (literary/art magazine, newsmagazine, yearbook and newspaper) are the only activities in which multiple schools in a Group may emerge as state champions, since publications are evaluated and ranked against a set of criteria, and not other publications.  During the 2008-09 school year, 15 high schools reached the pinnacle of success in literary magazine publication and were awarded a Trophy Class ranking.

Since 1995, the VHSL has also recognized schools that have received five Trophy Class rankings within a seven-year period by awarding them with the Charles E. Savedge Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholastic Journalism.  Schools with two or more Savedge Awards for literary magazines are Atlee (2), Herndon (2), Washington-Lee (2), George Washington (3) and Woodbridge (3).

The VHSL has offered evaluation services for literary magazines since 1926, when the only school to receive the Trophy Class was E. C. Glass High School of Lynchburg.
