Championship Pairings - 6 Classes

Under the new (2013-14), six classification system, there are six Groups (classes) with two Regions in each Group.  The Region Champion #1) and Region Runner-up (#2) from each Region advance to a state semifinal.  The champion from one region plays the runner-up from the other region within each group and vice versa.  The state tournament in all classes consists of two semifinals and a final (see below).  The regions are as follows:  6A North, 6A South, 5A North, 5A South, 4A North, 4A South, 3A East, 3A West, 2A East, 2A West, 1A East, and 1A West.

In sports where there are not enough teams within a Group to merit a state championship, that group (or groups) is/are merged with the next highest classification that does have a state championship.  In those multi-class tournaments, schools within the smaller groups are assigned to conferences in the higher classification for post-season play.  Regardless of the number of championships per sport, however, Region champions and runners-up advance and are cross-bracketed.

Football is the one exception.  For an explanation of the football post-season, click here.
