National Anthem Project

MEMORANDUM TO:  VHSL Member School Principals

                    FROM:  VHSL and the NFHS

               SUBJECT:  National Anthem Project

MENC:  The National Association for Music Education is sponsoring an initiative called the National Anthem Project.  The primary goal of this initiative is to restore America 's voice through music education by informing Americans about the National Anthem, encouraging them to learn the words to the anthem and promoting music education in schools.  The project was launched to raise awareness about the importance of supporting and funding school music programs.

The NFHS is one of a number of "Supporting Organizations" for the National Anthem Project and is initiating a nationwide promotion to assist with the project.  The NFHS has invited the VHSL and other member state associations to read a brief script prior to the performance of the National Anthem at all appropriate state association events throughout the school year.  While this initiative will effectively publicize the project to a broad audience, the potential for even greater exposure exists by extending the project to local school events throughout the nation.

Your school has the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile project, and we hope you will take part in this initiative.  Two scripts have been prepared to be read prior to the performance of the National Anthem at all appropriate school events throughout the 2006-07 school year, and they are enclosed herein:

Script 1 -- To be used when you are using a live performance of the National Anthem

Script 2 -- To be used when you are using a pre-recorded performance of the National Anthem

Please join your state association and the NFHS in this important project.  With a minimum amount of effort, your school can promote both patriotism and music education in schools!

VHSL Strategic Planning

We Want You!

During the coming year the VHSL intends to conduct a Strategic Planning initiative that will help give our organization long-range direction over the next five or six years.  We invite principals, athletic/activities directors, superintendents, coaches and citizens at large to participate in this process.

Also in 2006-07 and subsequent years, the League needs people to assist with different advisory committees dealing with a variety of issues ranging from Calendar and Equity to Division Playoffs and Sportsmanship.

If you are interested in serving on an advisory committee or the Strategic Planning initiative, we ask you to check your areas of interest on a response form linked below and submit this to your region chairman and the VHSL office.

Additional information will be listed on future Weekly Updates, and we hope many readers will consider taking an active role in this manner.
