FOOTBALL MEETING REQUIRED: For 2006, all high schools MUST invite representatives of an officials association to address the team and coaches on three areas of interest: safety, sportsmanship and playing rules. It is the school's responsibility to contact the officials associations.
Effective July, 2004, only the “Official: football Wilson 1003 GST or any other Wilson football (TDS- 1005 – 1001) may be used in a state playoff game. Schools cannot use a football from another company.

COACHES/ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S INFORMATION Heat alert for fall coaches and athletic directors At the May 3 Executive Committee meeting Dr. Vito Perriello, Chairman, of VHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) presented the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) “Considerations for Fall Preseason Practice”. The intent of these guidelines is to provide State Associations some direction on possible approaches to further reduce the incidence of heat injuries and death during sports participation. These heat injuries and deaths continue to occur despite excellent educational materials and efforts from the National and State level of the Federation family. The SMAC and NFHS recognize that states vary in their structure, climate, and relationship with a local SMAC and therefore should utilize this template to develop a pre-season acclimatization and recovery model appropriate to the individual state’s situation. This is mostly needed for fall sports, especially football, because of equipment and time of the year. Coaches are asked to review the considerations and share input with their athletic director and principal. Coaches will also be given an opportunity to complete a survey response form which is available on the VHSL website at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=705312353047. In addition to the video, there are links to the ACSM Football Guidelines as well as a parent letter for Coaches to use to assist them in communicating the importance of pre-season acclimation. Gatorade is working on providing the DVD as a downloadable file for coaches to be able to save on their computer. This feature should be ready in the next few weeks.
