"Quality Sports Begin With Quality Coaches"

In May of 2009 the Executive Committee of the Virginia High School League passed a coaches education initiative which requires all first time athletic coaches at VHSL member schools, and those athletic coaches who are exempted through the VHSL Coaches Rule 27-2-2(4) to complete an approved course in principles of coaching and sport first aid.  Additionally, ALL athletic coaches are required to complete a VHSL component which familiarizes the coach with rules and regulations found in the VHSL Handbook as well as those found at the local school level.

BASIC COURSE

The Basic Course includes all coaching principles and sport first aid topics, plus the VHSL state and local component. Most coaches can complete the full online course in 4-5 hours.

The Basic Course is required of:

  - All first-time VHSL athletic coaches

  - All athletic coaches who are exempted through the VHSL Coaches Rule 27-2-2(4)

The VHSL Component may be taken as part of the Basic Course, or as a standalone course,  ALL VHSL coaches must complete the VHSL component of the Basic Coaches' Education Course.

The VHSL Component is required of:

  - ALL VHSL athletic coaches

ADVANCED COURSE

The Advanced VHSL Coaching Course is the familiar "face-to-face" course, and includes Coaching Principles, Sport First Aid, and the State/Local Component.  This is still the "flagship," accredited, classroom delivered course that meets the 40 National Standards for Sport Coaches.
