Basketball Divisions

The VHSL division basketball playoff system separates schools in Groups A and AA by regions at the 50 percent point of the total number of schools that sponsor basketball teams, and that are eligible for the playoffs, forming two divisions within each region.  Divisions are established every other year prior to the opening of schools for a two-year period corresponding with the basketball contract period, based on grades 9-12 of a school's average daily membership (ADM) as reported to the State Department of Education on March 31 of the odd calendar year.
