Boys Tennis

DID YOU KNOW -- VHSL held its first boys tennis championships in 1924 with Galax High School taking top honors. Before the current A, AA and AAA groupings began in 1971, Maury High School of Norfolk won a VHSL-record 14 state titles. Since 1971, Mills E. Godwin High School of Richmond has won 13 championships and George Mason High School of Falls Church has won 12 titles, including six straight from 1986-91. Harrisonburg High School won a VHSL-record eight consecutive championships from 1969-76. 

In 2009, Mills E. Godwin won its eighth Group AAA crown and 13th overall (five consecutive from 1982-86 in Group AA).  In Group AA, Western Albemarle High School of Crozet won its third straight title, while Gate City High School successfully defended its Group A championship.

3,129 boys at 250 member schools participated in boys tennis during the 2009 season.
