Boys Outdoor Track

DID YOU KNOW -- First held in 1915, track and field, along with basketball, is the oldest championship event conducted by the VHSL. From 1920 through 1931, the VHSL recognized both prep and public high school champions. In 1932, John Marshall High School in Richmond won the first all public VHSL championship. Prior to the current A, AA and AAA groupings in 1971, Newport News High School won a VHSL-record 19 championships with John Handley High School of Winchester winning a VHSL-record seven titles from 1935-41. Since 1971, Menchville High School of Newport News and Sussex Central High School have won six championships each with Sussex Central winning four straight titles from 1989-92.

In 2010, Ocean Lakes won the Group AAA title, while Grafton and Clarke County claimed the Group AA and A championships.

11,156 boys at 303 member schools participated in boys outdoor track during the 2009 season, making boys outdoor track the second most popular VHSL sport for boys.
