Gymnastics

DID YOU KNOW -- Gymnastics was the first "modern era" VHSL sponsored girls sport. From 1969 until 1973, VHSL gymnasts competed for individual titles in Floor Exercise, Balance Beam, Uneven Parallel Bars, Vault, Tumbling (discontinued as an event in 1973), and All-Around events. In 1974, team competition was added, with Midlothian claiming the AAA championship and Varina winning the first of four "unclassified" titles (1974-77). Today, Group AAA continues to sponsor team championships, while gymnasts from all groups compete for individual titles in an "open" meet. Lake Braddock High School of Burke has won a VHSL record nine team championships, five in a row from 1995-99. First Colonial's Kara Wright owns the VHSL record for individual titles with 11 including four All-Around titles from 2003-06. Osbourn Park, Manassas, has won the last three team championships, defeating Floyd Kellam, Virginia Beach, by narrow margins in each of the last three state meets.

VHSL conducted boys gymnastics championships from 1963-1984.

839 female student athletes at 78 VHSL schools competed in gymnastics in 2008-09.
