Girls Golf

DID YOU KNOW - In 2002, Chantilly's Jenny Suh followed her individual medalist winning performance (36-hole, 138) in the VHSL Group AAA Boys Golf Championship a week earlier, with a first-place finish in the inaugural VHSL Girls Open Golf Championship. By 2005, participation in The Open had grown from 35 to over 100 competitors. Girls now advance through zone qualifiers to this individual championship event.

In this year's 2009 VHSL Girls Open Golf Championships, Oakton's Amanda Steinhagen pulled away from the field shooting a VHSL Girls Open record for low score with a 36-hole total of 138 (70-68). Hickory's Lauren Coughlin finished 11 shots back at  149 after winning a three-hole playoff  over Park View's (South Hill) Paige Reese.  Steinhagen also won the tournament in 2007.  Hannah Pierce, King George (150) and Viviana Perez, Dinwiddie (152) rounded out the top five.

In 2008, 151 VHSL schools reported participation of 331 girls in the sport of golf. A girls team championship is on the horizon, as the number of female golfers continues to grow.
