
DID YOU KNOW - Groveton High School won the first-ever VHSL field hockey championship in 1977, but since then the team title has been won 16 times by Frank W. Cox High School of Virginia Beach. Cox won seven straight championships from 1989-95 which is third on the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) all-time charts, while former Cox coach Nancy Fowlkes' 392 career wins is 12th on the NFHS all-time list.
Group AA/A conducted its first championship in 2000 with Tabb High School of Yorktown winning the title.
At the 2009 VHSL Field Hockey Championships, Cox won it's fourth consecutive title defeating Mountain View 5-0 in the Group AAA final. In Group A/AA, Tabb High School won its second straight title, 5-0, over over James Monroe, and its third overall which is the most in Group A/AA.
4,582 girls at 136 member schools participated in field hockey in 2008.
