Cheer

DID YOU KNOW - VHSL conducted its first cheer championship in 1997 with Gar-Field High School of Dale City winning the Group AAA state title. Group A began competition in 1998 with West Point High School winning the state crown, while Liberty High School of Bealeton won the first Group AA championship in 1999.

At the 2008 VHSL Cheer Championships, Strasburg High School took home the gold, in Group A, their first title since 2001.  In Group AA, a mere two and a half points separated the top three teams, William Byrd High School (266.5), Broad Run (265.0) and Brentsville (264.0).  This was William Byrd's third title in four years, and fifth overall.  Stone Bridge High School won its third Group AAA title in four years.  More »

Though secondary to the true and traditional role of cheerleaders in the school community, competitions afford the participating student-athletes an opportunity to showcase their own athleticism and skill, shifting the spotlight from athletes on the field or court to the cheerleaders themselves.

4,734 girls and 105 boys at 209 member schools participated in cheer during the 2008 season.
