DID YOU KNOW - VHSL conducted its first cheer championship in 1997 with Gar-Field High School of Dale City winning the Group AAA state title. Group A began competition in 1998 with West Point High School winning the state crown, while Liberty High School of Bealeton won the first Group AA championship in 1999.
At the 2011VHSL Cheer Championships, Cosby High School captured its second straight Group AAA championship, while Briar Woods High School claimed its third straight Group AA crown and Manassas Park took top honors in Group A.
Though secondary to the true and traditional role of cheerleaders in the school community, competitions afford the participating student-athletes an opportunity to showcase their own athleticism and skill, shifting the spotlight from athletes on the field or court to the cheerleaders themselves.
4,698 girls and 83 boys at 212 member schools participated in cheer during the 2009 season.
