Cheer
DID YOU KNOW - VHSL conducted its first cheer championship in 1997 with Gar-Field High School of Dale City winning the Group AAA state title. Group A began competition in 1998 with West Point High School winning the state crown, while Liberty High School of Bealeton won the first Group AA championship in 1999.
At the 2009 VHSL Cheer Championships, King William High School took home its fourth championship in Group A, and its second title in three years. In Group AA, Briar Woods won the school's first-ever state championship. A runner-up in 2008, Fairfax High School won its first Group AAA title with a thrilling two-point win over defending champion Stone Bridge, 261.5-259.5. More »
Though secondary to the true and traditional role of cheerleaders in the school community, competitions afford the participating student-athletes an opportunity to showcase their own athleticism and skill, shifting the spotlight from athletes on the field or court to the cheerleaders themselves.
4,734 girls and 105 boys at 209 member schools participated in cheer during the 2008 season.
