Athletics Officials

Officials play an integral part in VHSL programs. Officials are the arbiters and protectors of the game. Officials are there to make sure that neither team nor any competitor has an advantage that it not intended by rule. With a thorough knowledge of the rules and an understanding of how to apply them, officials make the game better.

Being an official requires many things - time, effort, dedication, commitment, patience, communication skills, physical fitness. Officials must be students of the rules and of the game. Officials must be selfless - no one, except for maybe other officials, comes to the game to watch you! Officials must have confidence without arrogance. Officials must have the courage to do the right thing - to make the tough call. Most of all, officials must be honest and fair - an official's character and integrity must be beyond reproach.

Becoming a good official is hard work, but the work is worth it.

Most importantly, as an official involved with education-based athletics, you have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of student athletes

Without officials, there would be no game.
