National playing rules for high school baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, gymnastics, boys lacrosse, soccer, softball, swim and dive, track and field, volleyball and wrestling are written by the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS). In golf, girls lacrosse and tennis, schools follow the rules provided by the applicable national governing body (e.g., U.S. Golf Association, U.S. Lacrosse, U.S. Tennis Association). VHSL does not maintain an inventory of rules books, but interested parties may purchase them directly from the appropriate governing body. In sports where VHSL has adopted modifications to national rules, those modifications are documented in the VHSL Handbook and Policy Manual.
