History

DID YOU KNOW - VHSL has conducted football championships since 1920, when Newport News High School defeated Jefferson Senior High School of Roanoke, 14-7, in VHSL's first title football game. Since that time, Hampton High School has won a VHSL-record 17 championships, four of them consecutive (1995-98). A six-division format and power-ratings system were put into place in 1986 to promote more equitable competition between similarly sized schools.

In Division I Clintwood defeated Galax 33-28 to win its first state title since 1978 and its fourth overall. Gretna claimed its third Div. 2 crown and fifth VHSL football title overall with a 21-16 win over Goochland. In Div. 3 Brookville won it's second football title with a 34-33 win over  James Monroe.  In the Div. 4 final,  Briar Woods won it's second straight championship with a 28-26 win oer Christiansburg. Phoebus defeated South County 20-10 to claim its fourth straight Div. 5 crown; it's fifth title in six years; and seventh overall, which is the third most in VHSL history behind Hampton's 17 and Powell Valley's 8 titles.  Oscar Smith claimed the school's second state football championship with a 42-14 win over Centreville in the Div. 6 championship game.

Football is the most popular VHSL sport for boys. In 2009, 25,651 boys and 122 girls at 301 schools played football.
