VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE ANNOUNCES
CHAMPIONS IN WACHOVIA CUP ATHLETIC COMPETITION

State champions of VHSL state champs! Winners of the 2003 Wachovia Cups for year-long excellence in Virginia High School League athletic activities are Brentsville District, Blacksburg and Lake Braddock.

All have won before, with Brentsville dominating Group A for the third consecutive year; Blacksburg back on top of Group AA after winning the cup in 1990, 1991 and 1993; and Lake Braddock building on Group AAA wins in 1998 and 2001.

Brentsville, which moves to Group AA next year, won fall, winter and spring competition to take a 97.5-point decision over second-place James Monroe. Blacksburg had led in the fall but dropped to seventh after winter play before rebounding to dominate spring competition to edge Heritage-Lynchburg by 10 points. Lake Braddock also led in the fall but fell to second before rebounding with a strong spring for a 100-point margin over Frank Cox.

The League’s most coveted recognition, the cups have been presented for 14 years, first by Central Fidelity and now by Wachovia bank. The award recognizes the VHSL schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic and academic activities programs each year. Cups are presented for athletic and academic activities to the top school in each of the League’s enrollment groups. George Washington (AAA), Charlottesville (AA) and Madison County (A) were announced earlier as 2003 winners for academic activities.

The winner of the Wachovia Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports in the following manner:

50

Fifth place

30

Second place

45

Sixth place

Third place

In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of schools that tie and the number of schools that finish higher in the standings. For example, the baseball quarterfinal losers equally divide total points for fifth through eighth place (22.5 points each) while semifinal losers split third and fourth place (37.5 points each).

Schools earning the League’s Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award earn 50 points each.

Brentsville (345) finished among the state’s Top 5 in eight sports and scored the most total points ever in Group A, winning state championships in boys cross country, wrestling and girls soccer and finishing second in girls track; third in girls cross country, cheer and boys track; and fifth in golf. The previous Group A record was 305, set by Strasburg in 1999. James Monroe (247.5) scored points in seven events to finish second this year. George Mason (202.5) was third, Gate City (192.5) fourth and George Wythe-Wytheville (185) fifth.

Blacksburg (255) took Group AA by winning the state championship in girls basketball, finishing second in boys soccer, fourth in golf and boys swim/dive and eighth in girls cross country and reaching the semifinals in girls soccer and boys tennis. Heritage (245) placed in only five events but won state championships in four of them: football, boys indoor and outdoor track and girls outdoor track, while also finishing second in girls indoor track. Jamestown (230) finished third, Fauquier (212.5) fourth and Tabb (205) fifth.

Lake Braddock (365) scored the second highest total ever in Group AAA, earning points in 10 events: a state championship in girls soccer; second in field hockey and boys soccer; third in girls cross country; fourth in boys cross country, boys outdoor track and girls outdoor track; fifth in girls indoor track, a tie for fifth in boys indoor track, and quarterfinals in girls basketball. Frank Cox set the record (407.5) in 1997. Cox (265) finished second this year, Great Bridge (251.5) third, Thomas Jefferson S&T (245) fourth and James Robinson (224) fifth.

"Winning a state championship in a single sport is a remarkable achievement; it is the exceptional school that dominates VHSL competition in multiple sports throughout the year," said Ken Tilley, VHSL executive director. "We are pleased that so many schools, 191 this year, figure in the final standings. We congratulate all the schools that did well, but especially Brentsville District, Blacksburg and Lake Braddock, and we thank Wachovia for supporting this important recognition."

The Wachovia Cup will be presented formally at the University of Virginia’s VHSL Day football game against Duke on Aug. 30.
