Few experiences enrich the lives of boys and girls as much as participation in interscholastic athletics and academic activities. For nearly 100 years, the Virginia High School League has provided opportunities for Virginia's youth to engage in a variety of activities and competitions that promote education, personal growth, sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship.
More than 200,000 students across the Commonwealth participate each year in 27 different sports and eight academic activities. Through their participation, these future leaders learn skills and life lessons that will become the foundation for who they are as adults.
Since 1970, annual participation in VHSL activities has more than doubled. In the past decade, the League has added 19 new state competitions for boys and girls as well as a nationally renowned Student Leaders Conference. Today the VHSL sponsors 91 high quality state team championships and offers evaluation services and workshops for student publications.
Young people need these programs to be winners in life!
At the end of each school year, VHSL member schools provide participation information to the League office and to the NFHS. Some of the more recent surveys can be found on this page.
